As a new migrant, I watched my mum waiting anxiously by her new mobile - this was 2001 - for a recruiter to call about jobs that day. It never left her side as she knew not answering one call meant no work for the day, but miss three calls and she would be off the recruiter’s call list. It seemed strange that a recruiter would spend all that time interviewing and conducting reference checks, only to stop making placements because she missed a few calls.
The insight only came years later, as we talked about the gig economy and reminisced old times. It took me by surprise that this was still an issue for casual workers in 2015. Although many recruiters wanted to improve the candidate experience, it remained far too costly and time-consuming to enumerate all the job options to all their candidates. It just didn’t make financial sense. There must be a win-win-win here!
What everyone wanted was a simple, fuss-free way of exchanging information and availability. In the digital age, the ability to transparently share job opportunities would mean that candidates could plan ahead, and recruiters could forward fill jobs faster. Overall there would be fewer mistakes and less admin work. So I created Scissors.
Freedom to work when and where you want, and job security, shouldn’t be mutually exclusive. That’s where Scissors comes in. By cutting through the busy work of logistics, paperwork, and constant to-and-fro communications, Scissors brings the sides together.
